We help communities recover, rebuild and reimagine after disaster

Every wildfire has three distinct chapters

Every Fire Has Three Chapters | Mike Wink, CAL FIRE OSFM | Wildfire Leadership Summit 2026. Watch the full session from the 2026 Wildfire Leadership Summit in Sonoma, California, presented by After the Fire USA.

Mike Wink, Staff Chief for Wildfire Risk Reduction at CAL FIRE Office of the State Fire Marshal, opens Day One with a keynote on leadership, trust, and service under pressure.

Mike traces a decade of megafire across Siskiyou, Lake, and Sonoma counties, from the Boles Fire in 2014 to the Valley Fire in 2015 to the Tubbs Fire in 2017. He frames every fire as three chapters, before, during, and after, then shares what his teams built next: new addresses for rural parcels, adopted hydrants, information boxes for first responders, and home hardening, house by house.

His close: "We are all part of the puzzle creating a better normal."

Topics covered: wildfire risk reduction, CAL FIRE, Office of the State Fire Marshal, Valley Fire, Tubbs Fire, Boles Fire, home hardening, wildfire preparedness, first responders, fire-adapted communities, Mike Wink.

The Wildfire Leadership Summit is an invitation-only, three-day convening from After the Fire USA, an initiative of Rebuild NorthBay Foundation. 2026 Summit: September 15–17, 2026, The Hanna Center, Sonoma, California.
