Anchor Institutions and Long-Term Recovery | Ed Chan, Kaiser | Wildfire Leadership Summit 2026

Anchor Institutions and Long-Term Recovery | Ed Chan, Kaiser | Wildfire Leadership Summit 2026. Watch the full session from the 2026 Wildfire Leadership Summit in Sonoma, California, presented by After the Fire USA.

Ed Chan, MHA, RD, FACHE, President of the Hawaii Market for Kaiser Foundation Health Plan and Hospitals, opens Day Two with a keynote on anchor institutions and the long arc of recovery.

Ed walks through Kaiser Permanente's response after the Maui wildfires, including the Lahaina Clinic, prefabricated and built on site in less than nine weeks, and how an anchor institution moves from emergency response to long-term resilience. He looks at housing stability, food security, access to care, workforce development, and mental health, and shares what three years later looks like: recovery is real but uneven.

The session closes with lessons learned on knowing your strengths, agility, coordination, and community partnerships.

Topics covered: anchor institutions, Kaiser Permanente, Lahaina Clinic, Maui wildfire recovery, Lahaina, health care after disaster, long-term resilience, Ed Chan.

The Wildfire Leadership Summit is an invitation-only, three-day convening from After the Fire USA, an initiative of Rebuild NorthBay Foundation. 2026 Summit: September 15–17, 2026, The Hanna Center, Sonoma, California.
